I've found a baby pigeon, whats the best thing to do?

I've found a baby pigeon in my garden, he doesn't seem to have the feathers he needs to fly yet, and I'm worried that he may die, or be killed.

I've made sure my cat is in, and I've put him on top of my shed, I believe he may of come out of the tree's that over hang the shed, as we have had a pair of pigeons in the garden for a few years now. I've also thrown some wild bird seed up there, although I'm not sure if he is old enough to eat it, but it may attract his Mum %26amp; Dad.

Sensible answers only please, I'm real concerned about the little guy, and jokes about pies %26amp; casseroles are not required right now.

I've found a baby pigeon, whats the best thing to do?
Oh for cryin' out loud. Half of the people answering are sheer morons.

Here's what you can do if you'd like. Just follow the directions on this page: http://pigeoncote.com/vet/feedbaby/feedb...

If the youngster already has feathers about 3/4 grown, he may even be able to feed himself somewhat. Put some small seed on the table - the roundness will help set off his pecking instinct. Big thing is water, he needs it in a cup or bowl at least an inch (2.54 cm) deep. Pigeons drink by suction.

If you don't have time to tube him, you can even just hand feed him (his beak is large but soft and not any sort of a threat to anything at all.)

Yes, adult pigeons feed a type of food called pigeon milk (however DO NOT feed the bird cow's milk or any other mammal milk. - it ain't the same thing and the bird has no lactase to digest the milk sugars and it will make him sick)

Good luck (Oh, by the way, it's a myth about parent birds deserting their young because of the "smell" of humans on them. Doesn't happen.)
Reply:Dont take to vets, noooo look after it or ohone RSPCA, vets put it down, i found a crow, they put it down because of a 'badly injured back' PAH it was walking and trying to hide when i was catching it to put in a box to take to the vets, vets dont get money for treating wild birds, take it to a bird hospital or something.
Reply:Yeah, I agree with the above posters. You can take the baby in and attempt to raise it by feeding it and keeping it in a warm dry area, but just don't get your hopes up okay. A lot of times the mother bird will kick the sick/weak babies out of the nest. They know they're ill birds, and are not going to survive. That's more than likely what happened. Good luck to you and the bird.
Reply:i personaly think that u should try and get to your house as it would reduse shock

hope it helps
Reply:If the parents don't come in a few hours, I'd bring it to a wildlife shelter or ASPCA. Maybe call your local animal shelter and see where to bring it.

Baby birds need to eat very often, and without the Momma bird keeping him warm he will most likely die.

Birds can be picky, sometimes if a human has touched it the parents will reject it because of the human smell on the baby.

There's also the threat of another bird coming along and killing it, if I were you I'd get him off of your shed right now before disaster strikes.

Good luck, I hope everything works out for baby bird! :)
Reply:You have done the right thing but you need to keep constant watch for other cats which will be easy prey for them and maybe thats what the mother is afraid of. I hope the mother gets her chick back.
Reply:u can raise him inside your house...u might have to since hes much too young to eat real food...u can keep him in a cardboard box or something with a few soft towls to keep him warm. you should stop by the pet store and get baby bird food....basically birds regergatate thier food and transfer into the babies throat. im not sure how many times you should feed him but at least 3 times a day i think. baby birds are just as demanding as human babies. good luck.

i know pigions eat everything...including bugs so maybe try smashing up bugs in the baby bird food...so its not a strict seed only diet....thier diet should have both seeds and bugs. OH and make sure he doesnt have lice....
Reply:your best bet is to contact a zoo or your local wildlife agency. there are state sponsored and individualy funded rehabilitation centers for every animal you imagine. they can treat his injurys and reteach him how to survive in the wild if necasary. usualy a zoo will be able to tell you how to contact a rahabilitation or atleast the state wildlife agency.
Reply:Sorry but i didn't read what you wrote but i know enough about pigeon's to tell you made a big mistake most pigeons die old or young when handled by humans i don't know why myself but when i was young i had similar problems and tried several solution not even vet's would be able to help simply because well... they just died.
Reply:The best thing to have done was leave it alone! when young birds fall from the next the mama bird will feed it and watch over it... as long as humans don't pick it up or touch it. Once that happens the mama bird will usually let the baby bird die!So if you have a good supply of bugs and worms take the baby bird in and keep it warm. Wrap a clock in a towel and put it in a box with the baby bird. depending on how old and how healthy the bird is it might make it! Good Luck
Reply:You've done the right thing to give the pigeon a chance as the parents should be near by, if it looks like he's been left phone your nearest animal sanctuary and they will help. You could raise it yourself but it takes a lot of effort.

Good luck, hope our feathered friend is a survivor..x
Reply:Wring it's neck,
Reply:You idea with the seed is good. If no sign of the parent(S) by dusk arrange for a vet to visit first thing.
Reply:Unless he is unjured or severely ill, the best thing to do is leave him up there and check on him ocassionally.

Call a local vet if he starts to starve to death or some other issue occurs. They can guide you from there.

Good luck!
Reply:Look After It

Take It To The VET
Reply:Many of these answers are a load of rubbish. Pidgeons do not eat bugs. baby pidgeons do not eat seeds or regurgitated food (well not directly anyway) Pidgeons produce a kind of milk in their crops which they feed to their young. I do know someone who did rear one which lived for several years afterwards but I can`t remeber what sort of milk she used but it can be done.

If you contact a local vet, pidgeon, keeper or better still a bird rescue centre they will put you right.

Don`t feed seeds or insects. It wont be able to digest it.
Reply:if i was u, id take it to a vet.
Reply:sounds like a fledgling. this means he has feathers but they may not seem long enough for him to fly properly. at this stage the baby bird jumps out of its nest onto the gound and hopes around for a few hours to a couple of days.. then its parents coax it into a nearby tree until it can fly a little better.

you did the right thing by leaving him there. he is learning to fly and it might take a week or two before he can on his own.

dont let your cat out the back until then.

.
Reply:This is similar as my friends case

She followed my advice

But she didnot have a cat.

She told her mom and dad and now she has her pet bird.

Hope you understood what I said.

You have to choose one between your cat and pegion.
Reply:u should feed it bread and put a bowl of water beside it try to find worms in your garden because pigeons love worms.

by the way i totaly disagree with jontelleo.

and bert.

Reply:this bird is a fledgling and most likely fell out of its nest. the best thing to do with baby birds is to put them back where you found them so that the mother bird can come back to feed it. it's not true that the mother bird won't come back for the baby if you touch it...birds don't have that great of a sense of smell...it is possible that something will attack it or eat it or whatever, but unfortunatly that's the way nature works and there's not really anything we can do about that. hope that helps!
Reply:feed it and let it go, there is nothing than being free :)
Reply:smother it
Reply:When I say, "PULL!" you chuck that sucker up into the air...and I'll take it from there!!! 8o)
Reply:I would kill it. Pigeons are plaguing many cities. They are overpopulating and many cities have hired men to hunt them.
Reply:they taste like chicken
