I have an area at the bottom of the garden that i wanted to turn into a patio type area that i can put a table and chairs/ plant pot etc on.... its concreted over but the concrete is all broken and uneven (i think there used to be a shed on it)... was gonna just fill it with stones/ pebbles (like on a driveway) as i dont really want tot spend too much on it and have no idea on how to start laying paving etc.... anyone got any other ideas....?
Low Cost Patio solution......any ideas?
Just cover it over with an inch or two of pea gravel. If you want to place pavers later, it will make a good base for leveling them. Limiting the depth of the gravel will help you to walk on it easier than a greater depth would.

Reply:Thanks for the kind words. If weeds are a problem on the slab now, the weed control fabric is probably overkill, and spraying the cracks with weed killer will probably be sufficient. Check out buying the pea gravel in bulk from a supply company, you might save some $'s. Report Abuse
Reply:Put Alyssum seeds in the cracks and water a couple times a day. The stuff will grow anywhere and it is nice to look at.
Reply:I am a landscape designer (in USA) and what I have done in the past is to take a sledge hammer and bust the concrete into pieces (not too small, maybe about 4' by 4'), then bury those in the ground, and place gravel around them. It is a cheap and environmental friendly way to create a patio :)

Reply:In between the cracks, put in sod, you can get one square at Home Depot for a small price and then break it up and shove pieces in betwee the cracks. Grass grows with ease and seems to love to grow in between places. It will look very natural. Before tucking the sod bits in there throw a perennial bulb in there of your favorite flower. Now, the sod piece only need be a small amount because it will expand TRUST ME.
In the Spring and Summer you might think about searching for a garden canopy, screen house or patio enclosure which will really set it off! (see attached link for ideas)
Now then, you can buy and look around at antique shops that aren't downtown and off the "strip" as well as garage sales in the "upper class" neighborhoods that have interesting "things" to decorate your patio with,(like iron or colored steel plant holders), if you are on a budget. Maybe if ya wanna splurge with money left over, you could add a patio pond.
And vwala!
