Rabbit digging dilema>>>>?

I have two rabbits both under a year old a girl and a boy. they live in a hutch in a shed by night and a large pen by day but are also let out to the whole garden. They dig like mad and it's ruining our lawn. Both of them dig we've seen them do it.....

Thankful for any help or suggestions.

Hello,

Rabbits DO dig - It's their natural behaviour and they should be free to behave this way.

To help your lawn you could restrict the rabbits to the exercise pen, and move this around every few days to give the grass chance to recover, re-seeding if necessary.

Also you could put some straw or wicker mats over the grass which the rabbits will enjoy digging into and this may save your grass a little.

Hope this helps.
Reply:Bunnies dig, that's thier thing.

You might want to try a sandbox or box of soil they can dig and make burrows in.
Reply:I have 30 rabbits. Grass or greens are realy not good for them. It can cause diareea. digging is somthing they will do. have an apple, cheery,or maple tree stick in there cage that will keep them ocupied it would also keep down malcusion.
Reply:I've the same problem. I've got a dutch, dwarf and a rex rabbit, all male and castrated. I've given up planting flowers. My garden is like a golf course. lol
Reply:Sadly, digging is part of a rabbit's natural behaviour so there's not a great deal you can do about it. I've got house rabbits (who also spend a lot of time outside in the garden) and they still have a dig at the carpets. I give them old towels to dig in and they seem to enjoy that. Maybe you could add a few tunnels and cardboard dens to try to distract them a bit.
Reply:Maybe set aside a fenced place where they can do their digging, and keep them away from your other parts of the lawn.
Reply:wel thats what my mums friends rabbitts do,that is completely normal but they will eventualydig the whole garden up.but thats how they experience about living in the wild, they want 2 feel as if they can feel free 2 roam around the garden.if u stop them doing that then they wnt feel happy and free thay will feel trapped.but u can try and tame them.
Reply:i have a mini lop rabbit and he lives outside in a hutch with an attached massive run, which is placed onto concrete, hence no digging which is a natural thing for a rabbit to do, i would sooner keep my rabbit safe in an enclosed run then free range for safety and to protect my lawn. Getting them neutered is a good idea espec for behaviour problems but may not stop digging - good luck
Reply:Unfortunately it's what they do ! Perhaps you can limit them to a smaller area of the garden and then lift the turf of the area and roll out some wire onto the area then replace the turf so that they can only dig down so far.

(how many times can I use the word 'area' in a sentence!)
Reply:Well you cant take them to a vet to remove their natural instincts. Try using a run instead with a base. The easy answer is.. Short of removing their feet or brainwashing them you cant stop it.
Reply:firstly are they both fixed otherwise you may hear the pittapatta of lil paws. there is nothing you can do to stop the digging as it is natural. when i had rabbits we used a large run to with a wire mesh underneath to stop the digging.
