How far can a USB cable go?

I want to run a USB cable to my shed with a webcam attached, The shed is between 15 and 20 metres down the garden. I have heard you can get repeaters??? because the maximum range for USB is 5 meters. Anyone know what the best option is? and what is a repeater exactly? does it need to be plugged in to the mains?

Can you not get a bluetooth or wireless link on you camera check out you computer shop or maplins, might be the easier option if available.
Reply:you can get extentions so you can have it as long as you want just go to a computer shop and ask
Reply:The max cable length recommended between a USB computer and USB interface is 5 meters (16.5 feet). Longer runs can be achieved through the use of powered USB hubs - up to 100 feet is then possible.
Reply:Its about 5 metres. You can get longer cables but I wouldn`t bother, look at alternative solutions cat5 or wireless maybe. Powered hubs can boost the signal or get a wireless webcam (ip Camera).
Reply:the cables vary in length try your local computer dealer
Reply:you can get a long usb cable
