Hi I have had my goldfish for about 3 months so I have cleaned his/her bowl out many times but today I was really suprised to find a tiny snail living on my fish tank plant looking very at home. Can anybody shed any light on how it got there? and should I leave it in the bowl with my goldfish ? will it cause any problems? It is rather sweet so I have left alone for now, it has a of pointy shell kind of like a miniature african land snail as oppose to a rounded garden snail.
Thanks
I found a water snail in my goldfish bowl can anybody tell my about water snails?
The snail came in on the plant, it happens a lot. Goldfish should not live in bowls though. They need 10 gallons per fish. A bowl is a torture chamber. Only a well cared for betta can live in a bowl.
Reply:They keep the glass clean by eating the algae. Keep him and call him Ronald
Reply:one is fine it most likely it got there via a plant but if you have more then one they will eat your plants and reproduce. if you want to get rid of it just crush it against the side of the aquarium, you goldfish will love to eat it.
Reply:it would have made its way there from a plant you have purchased, one is fine, but very soon you'll have loads, they can turn into a pain. If you like snails in your tank, you can buy apple snails which are really big and don't reproduce like rats and mice
Reply:They are perfectly safe to have, in fact they are good in that they eat up the rubbish in the bottom of the bowl.
Reply:Water snails' eggs are often imported on water plants. They can be a problem as they eat the plants and create slime and algae. The best way to rid your tank of them is to lure them to a slice of cucumber, which they relish. Put this between two saucers ( I use clam shells), leaving enough room for the snails to get in to the cucumber. Then you can empty both snails and cucumber out. This is a better way of dealing with the problem than dosing your tank with chemicals, which can upset the natural balance of the water. Snails multiply fast so go to it and good luck.
Reply:I think thy are very good for tank bowls and stuff! They get the slime coat of the sides! If it has not been harming your fish keep it! It probably got there from out side you let it in and it found water and hoped right in it should be fine leave it!
Good Luck :)
Reply:the snail is perfectly fine in the bowl, however, the goldfish is not.
goldfish require a minimum of 10gallons of very filtered water each, preferably 15gallons. goldfish (the smallest kinds) can get up to 10" plus goldfish are one of the messiest fish there is. PLEASE get your fish a 10gallon with a filter asap.
as for how the snail got there, my guess is the plant. it may eventually multiply. even if not it's really just adding to the already overloaded bioload. however, keeping it in there won't do enough harm to matter until it gets much larger. you goldfish will probably eat it by then though. if you want a snail I recommend a mystery/apple snail. very common and easy to find and can't breed by itself.
Reply:they are harmless enough but however they do breed very quickly and if you are not careful u could become over crowded with them. best to keep an eye on what is going on. id guess that it came free with the plant.....
Reply:To stop getting more, wash your plants to get rid of snail eggs
Reply:If its the same little small snail that I received from the the pet store by accadent they breed like crazy. It was scooped out with the fish. Your must have came from the plant when you bought it, but I had just one and it turned into hundreds. Be carefull they can take over.
Reply:I'm just a bit puzzled by all these people that say snails breed like crazy. Well there is only one...........
Reply:they are snails that live in water, if you need another explanation well you should probably get out more
