i wish to build one in the back garden where two stand at the moment hopefully 5x4 metrers
What is the maximum size i can build a shed?
In the United States, most local communities permit an outbuilding to be built, without a permit, up to 100 sq ft and 8' tall at the highest point. As previously noted, one can build anything they want with permits provided they meet local building codes which varry through the land, and world.
100 sq ft is equal to a square shed 3m x 3m - so in my town, you'd need a building permit to put up a 4mx5m building. It could be built, just with a permit.
Reply:Don't bother mine has been broken into twice in the last two weeks, naff all in it to take. Can't sleep now. Dont these people know what they do to you?
Reply:As big as you can imagine or dream.
Reply:5x4 shouldnt be a problem . hieght must not be no more than 8ft .also the material your using ie wood, concrete blocks or half block half wood.better still phone local council planning dept they will help also they will send you a building regs booklet.
Reply:In theory as big as the back yard minus any setback requirements (i.e. distance structures must be from the lot line). For the latter contact your local authority (city, county).
In practice you may wish to consider potential impact on your home (e.g. blocking of light) and on resale value (not everyone wants a big shed in their back garden). To maximize resale value
Note that in some jurisdictions there are maximum sizes of sheds that can be built without requiring a building permit (typically about 10 sq meters). Above this size the structure will be subject to inspection, and may increase your taxes.
That said, 5x4 meters is not that large, so other than cost the limitation is most likely going to be setback requirements.
Reply:contact code enforcement
Reply:UK No size limit in your own garden.
Reply:50 cubic meters before you need planning permission
Reply:That depends on the size of your yard and the local building code.
Reply:You will need to check with your local council as to whether you will planning permission or not. Yes, believe it, I have just had to do this, and, yes, I have to apply because there is a public footpath that runs past my garden. That is £135 for the permission, plans I will draw myself and £34.95 for a copy of the ordanance survey map giving location plan. You will not need building regulation approval if the volume is 75 cu. mtres or less, it is 3m to the ridge, (or less) and 3m to the eaves, (or less). Once planning permission is granted, you can put up what the 'ell you like within the above guidelines.
Reply:yep thats ok with me
Reply:The size of a shed is set by each community, the maximum size for a shed in my district is 210 square feet without a permit but now you have to show them where the structure will sit on your property in relation to your neighbor's property line.
