My puppy is scared of her lead?

she is a 9 month old black lab and her last owner wasn't very nice to her, kept her in a shed in the back garden and didn't train her. i got her last week and it took my a while to stop her cowering away from me. she is now used to having the lead on in the house and outside with no one holding it, but as soon as i pick it up she runs away and hides.I don't want to force it and make her more scared. Any ideas how i progress from here?

My puppy is scared of her lead?
Let her drag a 15 foot cloth lead. From 15 feet away, crouch down and face slightly away so you're not threatening. Have food in your hand.

Pick up the lead, toss her a treat (tiny bits of hot dogs are great), and put it down and walk away. Never give treats unless you're holding the lead, and only give great treats when you're doing this exercise.

Do it over and over. Then pick it up and reel it in a foot or so, treat, and drop it.

The trick here is to not rush it. If you get frustrated and drag her out (not that you would, but you know what I mean) then you'll have to work twice as hard to regain the ground you lost. This will take some time.

Good for you for adopting her!

Here's a great website for general puppy info:

Reply:You are going to have to spend time with her indoors before you progress any further. Sit on the floor with her on a lead and let her explore as far as she can. Slowly reel in the lead and give her a treat then let her decide what to do next. If you have a friend with a dog that she can make friends with, you are half way there as she will follow the other dog. Big as she is, carry her out put her down and let her explore. First time she will probably lose her legs, give it time then carry her home. Next time it won't be a new experience so she may stand up and sniff around a bit, then carry her home. third time, she is an old hand at this, so she will be far more curious and try exploring. From there you can use the techniques with the lead that you have taught her in the house. Slowly, slowly is the answer.
Reply:well she definitely was treated badly. and symbolizes the lead with something bad, maybe he use to beat her with it.. poor dog.

patience and love is the best thing.. just keep talking to her in soothing calm voice, and some treats would probably help.

eventually she will build up trust with you, good for you for getting her out of that situation. we need more people like you. :)
Reply:when she is on the lead in the house sit down and just hold it t for a few seconds then let it goe do this every day for a while and give her time she will get used to it
Reply:poor pup :(( did you choke the previous owner?

Maybe if you distract her with a toy and then take the leash while still playing with her? Different things work for different dogs.

Best of luck.
