Do you agree with the ancients?

This may sound strange to some, but I got it from an old almanac, in the zodiac section, that I use to plant my garden.

It was taught, by Aristotle, that a diviine spark comes from the eye of the sighted, to the object viewed, and then is attracted to the Sun God, making it shine in heaven. But what good, some asked, is the sun, when it's already daylight? (They had studied their ancient sciptures, and knew that the daylight preceded the sun) Others argued, that the Moon God was more benevolent, shedding light at night, when the world is dark. Still others argued, that neither the Sun God, nor the Moon God, were to be taken literally, but should be understood as an allegory.

Aristotles student, put the skeptics to the sword.

These arguments sound a lot like the arguements I hear between fundamentalists, orthodox christians, and agnostics. I'm a Christian, but I believe his wisdom was older than the hills he walked.

Do you agree with the ancients?
I like the part about allegory. I think the ancient ones

who wrote the Bible would shake their heads in disbelief

at the Christian fundamentalists who persist in a literal

interpretation of the Bible when the figurative meaning

is the all important thing. I fear the fundamentalists with

their politically selfish leaders would put the rest of

us scientifically enlightened ones to the sword if they

had the chance.
Reply:The works of Aristotle that still exist today are in treatise form and were, for the most part, unpublished texts. These were probably lecture notes or texts used by his students, "and were almost certainly revised repeatedly over the course of years." As a result, these works tend to be eclectic. Bottom line, like the bible, people interject their own opinions so you do not know what the truth is. My guess is you hit it right on the head when you said his wisdom was older than the hills Christ walked. In paganism then and still today the moon is considered feminine, "the goddess" or "a goddess" the sun as in the sky is also pagan but masculine as in "SON" some think the son of God came from this theory, sun/son. I personally agree with the ancients over todays beliefs, which in most part todays beliefs were originally BC and were tweaked a bit to fit modern society. Great question!!
Reply:I agree and it still works.
Reply:Aristotle was a great influence on Christian thinking despite the fact that he was a pagan. Christian thinking on souls owes a lot to Aristotle. Many Christian scholars hold, as Aristotle did, that "to attain any assured knowledge of the soul is one of the most difficult things in the world". Augustine, one of the most influential early Christian thinkers, described the soul as "a special substance, endowed with reason, adapted to rule the body". The medieval theology school known as scholasticism was based on Aristotle's philisophy.

Richard Rubinstein wrote an interesting book on Aristotle's influence on Christian, Jewish and Muslim theology in his book Aristotle's Children: How Christians, Muslims, and Jews Rediscovered Ancient Wisdom and Illuminated the Dark Ages.
Reply:I NEVER FOLLOWED MUCH IN THE STATED ARGUMENT

I JUST PLANTED THE DAY AFTER THE FULL MOON AND GOT BETTER RESULTS

AND SAME FOR FISHING TOO
Reply:Just because something is old, does not make it true.

The history of human progress is mostly based on our growing ability to distinguish myths from facts.

Facts can be verified by objective observation.
Reply:Ask an old farmer that has common sense of sowing and planting and they'll tell you to sow when the moon is full. Why? Because the tides are up and so is the moisture in the ground when the moon is full. Common sense is from God,..and there's none older and wiser than He.
Reply:nope can't say i agree with the ancients. Mayan calendar also says 2012 is the end. That would mean we have only 6 more years left.
Reply:uuuuh, what's the question?
Reply:There is absolutely no wisdom in his teachings. If you're truly a Christian, how dare you seek other gods eg. sun and moon gods. First commandment states "I am the Lord your God, you shall have NO OTHER gods but me". Don't you know that the zodiacs are part of the occult. Stay away from this stuff. Do not look to creation, but the creator. He holds all wisdom, knowledge and understanding and will give it freely to you. Repent of this sin, it is idolatry.
Reply:Yes some stories of Ancients are acceptable.
