How can we keep our rabbits and get rid of the rats?
You need to get lots of rat traps, if your in the UK you can get your council to put out some rat poison
Reply:You could get a cat to hunt the rats or perhaps a ferret. The smell of a ferret might be enough to scare the rats away.

Another option is rat poison and/or rat traps.
Reply:no do not get rid of those rabbit they will hate every thing because they will think you never loved them so you need to put a fence that they can not get on and a dooor and a roof let your bunnies in there for5 min then cacth them and put a fence around there cage so the rats can not bother them i hav only to rabbits and they are over a year old
Reply:In regards to the first answerer, a ferret would not be an effective choice. Ferrets do not need to be kept outside or in a shed, and the ferrets that come from mills and breeders are raised on kibble, so they probably wouldn't know what the heck to do with a rat.

Anyways, you need to try some traps and poison(as long as your rabbits can't get to it!), and if it is really bad, an exterminator. You don't need to be getting rid of your bunnies. You could move them into the house if you had to.
Reply:If you check sites like Orkin, a pest control company, they say that getting rid of shelter for the rats is the key, since rats can live on anything for food. That includes wall board, paper, and things much less interesting to us as food than your neighbor's garden. It could be that your shed plus the better food source is a powerful combination for them, but according to pest control/vector control information by the experts, eliminating the shelter is key. Read up on what kind of shelter rats like--piles of leaves, stacks of firewood, railroad ties for gardens, etc.

I had to get educated on all this a few years ago, when I saw a small rat under our bird feeder in broad daylight one summer. I was horrified! I'd never, ever seen a rat before, and here was one in my yard! I stopped feeding the birds for a while, but I found out that clean up under the feeder is pretty much all that's required to keep rats from feasting like that. What I accidentally discovered about the same time was that our garage door was not flush to the ground when closed, and I opened it one morning to find a pile of leaves had accumuated in the front corner and rat came running out from the pile of leaves. I was providing the habitat! So, we got a new garage door immediately, kept things cleaner around the bird feeder, and really did a yard clean up of leaves and things. I have not seen a rat in about five years, and believe me, I watch now. So, I think if you look at possible shelter in your and your neighbor's yard, you can probably eliminate the problem. It's almost certainly not the garden that's their primary interest since, again, they can live on trash.
