Questions on beagles?
1.. how much on average do they cost per week? In US $ I would say about $30

2. are they nice to live with? Yes, but they have a very distinct "howl"

3. would they be ok in an apartment/flat/small house/normal sized house without a garden: No...I think that a house with a yard is better since they like to run around and really need to be fenced in (see below). Also, they can howl pretty loud and neighbors in an apt might complain.

4. what are their down sides? Howling, running away, hyperactive

5. do they need lots of exercise? Yep

6. if you were to lift them up and compare them in their weight to something else, what would it be? Um...hmmm...looking around my room....a stack of textbooks.

7. how much do they need to be fed? I cup of dry food and a half a can of wet food 2x's a day.

8. do they bark alot? Mine didin't, but when he did you knew it...they have very distinct howls.

9. How much fur do they shed? A bit..not as bad as some, but worse then others.

10. In England, how much would it cost to buy one? I have no idea. I'm in the US

11. Are they nice with children? Yes...I have never had a problem. But...it largely depends on how you train and socialize the pup.

12. What are their bad habbits? The have a tendency to howl. The also take off...they are hunting dogs with good sniffers...sometimes they just can't resist the urge to "go after" something. It is important to ALWAYS keep them on a leash when there is not a fence, even if you have trained them.

13. how to stop them from biting/scratching you? Biting is normal when they are teething. Provide them with lots of toys and bones. Redirect them to the toys if they are biting something that they should not be. As far as scratching...keep their nails trimmed. Take them for frequent walks on pavement.

14. How heavy and tall are they? (in kg and cm): Again...kg and cm not my thing...sorry.

Reply:Did you bother to search for any of these answers, or are you at school and simply bored with the class?
Reply:i have a 'shargle' (half beagle, half shar-pei)..

1. i can't really put a price on how much he is a week.. maybe around $15ish..?

2. he's not full beagle but he's an amazing dog and really really smart.. he was housebroken in about 2 weeks.. learned to sit, lay down, and give his paw in 1 week..

3. i live in a small apartment with a small non-fenced in backyard.. we have a run outside for him and we live across the street from a big park

4. personally i think beagles have a really annoying bark.. its more like a loud deep howl.. mine doesnt have it thank god.. but when i see other beagles in the park they do it non stop when they see other dogs and its really obnoxious.. the breeder also told me that beagles are generally really stubborn and love to dig.. my puppys nails grow really long and thick because of this and you have to cut them on a regular basis

5. my dog is really really active and hyper.. i dont know if this is a beagle thing or just something with him

6. my puppys mother was a beagle and she was around 25 pounds.. not too heavy but not too tiny

7. mine eats a cup of dry food three times a day.. i dont give him wet food because it stinks and its not too good for his teeth

8. the beagles that i see in the park bark/howl non-stop.. mine barks but only when he gets excited or sees someone or something near our house.. hes very protective

9. mine only shed his puppy fur and he only sheds a really tiny bit..

10. depends.. you can look around for the best price.. my puppy was 200$ from a breeder

11. mine is perfect with children.. i have a 10 month old babby brother and they get along great.. the puppy is really gentle with him.. he gets a little nervous if theres large crowds of kids being really loud

12. they dig constantly and try to burry everything.. my puppy tries to burry his bones and toys in the couch.. when we take the cushions off theres tons of stuff hidden in there

13. keep their nails trimmed because they can get really sharp and scratch you everywhere.. they grow out of the shole biting scratching thing as they get older

14. mine is 22 pounds right now.. the breeder said he should be between 25-35 pounds (dont know what that is in kg) and he's about a foot tall or so (around 30 cm)

hope this helps!!! and good luck.. :)

Reply:Did you get in touch with a local (or national) Beagle Rescue group???

Each dog is different, no matter what the breed.

Are you committed to taking your dog to Obedience School so you and your dog can learn how to interact with one another AND your family for the rest of its life ??(10, 12 years or more)
Reply:beagles are lovely little dogs but can be spoilt vey easily they enjoy human contact but are a working dog at heart so will need a good walk at least once a day to keep them trim, they tend to be greedy and might even raid the bin or steal from a childs table / plate if they leave food un guarded, not very easy to train but a good class will help with that, they tend to be good with kids but you have to train the kids as well as the dog to get along e.g no ear pulling or tail pulling but that goes with any dog. i habve had my beagle for over a year now and he has only barked twice not that he is quiet as he brays at a lot of things we call it his wooo, he doesnt shed to much but the short hairs do tend to stick in the carpet and the sofa and are harder work to get off, my dog only get 1 small bowl of food a day but he is not a big beagle.
Reply:Beagles are often bred and kept in packs. This has resulted in a near genetic need for companionship. If they don't get it from another dog, they will demand it from you. This is not to say that a lone Beagle will be underfoot, begging for attention all the time, but they will require a substantial amount of your time in play and companionship. If they are not given enough stimulation from their 'pack', they will find ways to amuse themselves and this can mean trouble! Therefore they can be extremely destructive! Beagles have loads of energy and are well-suited to someone who likes to take long walks. Beagles can be kept successfully in apartments, however, you must be extremely dedicated in taking your dog out for regular walks. Bred to run cross-country in pursuit of rabbits and foxes, they don't mind going for long runs. Keep in mind however, that, you should wait until the dog is at least a year old before starting any running program and you should start slowly. Talk to your vet for more information on running with your dog.
Reply:There are two varieties of beagles, those measuring under 13" at the withers, and those measuring over 13" but under 15" at the withers. In the UK, there is one variety, under 16".

13" beagles weigh about 18-20lbs, 15" beagles weigh about 25lbs.

When young, beagles require a lot of exercise, they mellow into couch potatoes with age. You MUST HAVE a fenced yard to own a beagle. They can be vocal and require weekly brushing. They blow their coats twice a year. Some people find them difficult to train because they think for themselves, and as scent hounds, are easily distracted by their nose. They are highly food motivated, however, and can be trained with positive reinforcement, using treats as rewards. A good book about beagles is "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Beagles", which is available on www.amazon.com
