whats the best climbing plant that grows fast and has thorns the bigger the better i want to put it next to my neighbours shed to stop people climbing over it to my garden
Thorny climbers?
Bramble, Rubus fruticosus
grows very fast
has big *** thorns that are curved to stick in you
makes tasty berries, yumma
Reply:pyracantha is the plant you need.deadly if you catch your self on those thorns.(ouch)
Reply:Pyrocantha man, deadly.
Reply:bougainvillia is a pretty one.
Reply:Pyracantha is called 'Firethorn ' for very good reasons as all varieties have very sharp thorns. They have lovely small white flowers in the Spring which attract lots of insects and then produce Orange, Yellow or Red berries in the Autumn. These will attract the birds to your garden.
The only problem with Firethorn is that it is relatively slow growing so would suggest that you either buy some good sized plants or combine with something like a good old fashioned and prickly rambling rose like Rambling Rector or Wedding Day which will also have the benefit of giving you some delightful summer flowers when the firethorn is not at its best.
A final tip would be to say that you would be surprised just how effective a ' Beware of the dog ' sign can be when put in the right place !!!!!! Good luck.
Reply:IVE PUT PYRACANTHA ON ONE OF MY IRON FENCES AS KIDS SIT ON THE WALL THAT IT IS STOOD ON. THAT WAS THREE YEARS AGO. THEY HAVE ONLY JUST STARTED GETTING TO AN EFFECTIVE SIZE DURING THE EARLY PART OF THIS YEAR. I'VE TRIED THORNY ROSES IN ANOTHER AREA, THE KIDS ARE JUST MORE CAREFUL WHEN THEY CLIMB OVER THE FENCE. I'M WATCHING YOUR ANSWERS, HOPING TO SOLVE MY PROBLEM WITHOUT USING BARBED WIRE.
Reply:Tayberry! Added benefit of a nice crop of edible fruit - it will cover the shed in one season!
Reply:Rosa Rugosa is the one I would choose. It grows quickly and is Animal/Human proof, has wonderful smelling flowers and leaves, looses its leaves in the winter but is very prickly, . As a Bonus it had Red 'Hips' all winter and the Birds love them! I'm not too sure about growing it up the side of a shed though. Are the people climbing over the Shed or just between the shed and something else? Go for anyway it's well worth the try!
