on the website which organises the whole thing, it shows one suplier near me. well an hour or so away. By experince, would i just contact him and ask him to get me some hens? I will be keeping the new hens in a newly refurbished area of my garden, there is a shed with perches ramps and nests, which leads out to a chicken wired/fenced grassed area measuring 80 feet by 15 feet apx. before i make the decision to get these birds im asking the condition of their feathers after regrowth, will they get any? and also how many birds would you reccomend i keep in this space. also will they be safe from above entry from foxes or buzzards(im out in the sticks) thanks for answers I would very much like to hear fom someone who has rescued battery hens which were destined for the cat food. does the condition of there eggs improve? and has any of you got yours from the angus/dundee/perth area thnks
After Watching a TV show today ive decided that my new hens will be rescued battery hens. But HOW!?
I have rescue battery hens. You dont have to go through others to get them. I just went down to my local battery farm (or you can ring them) and asked if i could buy any end of lay hens. They rang me before they went to slaughter and i have paid 50p-£1.00 for each hen.
The feathers do go back and most of mine lay the day after i get them. The eggs improve over time with a better diet of layers pellets, grit and mixed corn. I have never had any buzzards bother my birds but foxes are the main culprit. make sure they are locked away at night.
Reply:My mother used to keep some rescued battery hens. They were originally going to be used for a Territorial Army survival training exercise - how to cook 'wild' animals. But some TA soldiers did not turn up, so these hens were going to be disposed of.
My mother took them, built a hen house surrounded with chicken (ha ha ha) wire. The hens always returned at the same time each night. Over the weeks they grew back their feathers. She fed them on vegetable scraps, rice, porridge. There were eggs by the hundred. A fox did get in once though.
But generally, hens will eat all sorts of things - slugs, worms, snails, food scraps. Just mind your feet if you wear open toed sandals.
Reply:There is a web site that you can obtain ex Battery hens,in the U.K.but unfortunately I have lost the site add.
Go into search and you may find it or contact your local recycycle group.
