My rights as a long standing tenant?

I have lived in a self contained bedsit for nearly 20 years. The bedsit is attached to the landlords own house in Hampshire. I have been unemployed for most of the time while living there and my landlord receives £260 per month from the council. I have no bills to pay, I have free Sky TV provided by my Landlord and he does my washing for me. I have the use of a large garden and a shed in which I store my vast record collection. My Landlord is nearly 80 and has suggested that I find somewhere else to live as he is thinking of selling the house. I think he is being put under pressure by his son who took against me last year when I nearly burnt the house down after leaving a candle burning while I went out and because I did not help his father with moving my stuff out for the refurbishment of the bedsit as I have a bad back (which I am on invalididty benefit for) At 50 years old I feel it is unfair to expect me to move from what I consider to be my home. Have you any advice.

I think you've had it too cushy for too long %26amp; maybe this lovely 80 yr old landlord %26amp; his son feel the same.

Who knows what the circumstances are, they may need to sell the house so this poor old chap can live out his years comfortably in a retirement home.

Also, put yourself in the sons shoes for a second. If it was your father who owned a house %26amp; someone had been living there for 20 yrs like a son - no bills to pay, he gets his washing done, free Sky TV, use of garden/shed etc, wouldn't you be slightly annoyed? I know I would!

I'm afraid if you'd have nearly burnt the house down with a candle %26amp; then you couldn't be arsed to help this 80 yr old move YOUR stuff - you'd have been out on your **** then!

If they decide to sell the house, you could sell your vast record collection %26amp; use it as a bond for another flat, no doubt you'll never get a landlord like this again - you never know, this could be the kick up the **** you need to get your back moving again %26amp; back into work %26amp; the real world!

Reply:Check with the UK's tenant laws....the US has different ones for various states...

Reply:Sit tight - the law protecs you as a tenant provided you have a rent book. The landlord must take court action to move you out.
Reply:What sort of tenancy agreement or lease are you on? You should have a look at this and see what it says about notice periods and that kind of thing. By the sounds of it, as a tenant of a private landlord, the landlord can ask you to leave at any time so long as he gives you reasonable notice - a month, for example. Although you've been living there for 20 years, you're still a tenant and if the owner wishes to sell up, then you have to move on.

I'd say that it would be unreasonable for you to make things difficult, although I do understand your concerns. My advice would be to apply for council/housing association accommodation and go from there.
Reply:maybe you can still stay there when he sells the place as for your wash i guess you will have to do it maybe you need to get on disabilty or something so you can live.
Reply:WAIT TILL HE HAS SOLD THE HOUSE,THEN YOU CAN GO TO THE COUNCIL AND GET A PLACE FROM THEM,MIND YOU ,YOU WONT GET A DEAL LIKE YOU HAVE NOW.
