Should I get a giant rabbit?

I had a call from my brother who was working at a house today and family are moving and want to give their giant rabbit away. He is 2.5 years old and sleeps indoors although is left outside in pen, shed and garden most of the day. I haven't got a house bit enough to take his cage but do have a big secure garden (70ft long and 20ft wide). Will he get accustomed to living outside if I have a raised hutch kept warm for him in winter? I am thinking I could bring him in on really cold nights in the cage I would buy from the current owner. Both my partner and I work 9-5 but I would dedicate time to spend with him every evening. I welcome any thoughts/advice on this matter! thank you!!

What climate do you live in? Excess heat is a bigger problem than cold, most rabbits do not need heat if they have lots of hay or straw to nest in and a dry sheltered area out of the wind. They do not, however, do well in temperatures over 80 degrees F. So, it will depend on your summer temperatures more than your winter ones. The major risk with outdoor rabbits is predators, some of the large raptors can literally carry a bunny off, and domesticated rabbits are easy, slow moving targets (even the big ones). In addition, they are easily frightened into shock, which can kill, by predators, even if they can't actually physically touch your bunny, their presence outside the cage could cause a heart attack in your bunny. So, think carefully about how to meet the rabbits needs before you bring it home, they are a big commitment.
Reply:Giant rabbits make wonderful pets, but they should be kept indoors. Despite being larger than some rabbit breeds, they still scare very easily and could be attacked and killed by wild predators. Rabbits make wonderful indoor house pets. They can be easily litterbox trained (just like a cat), especially if they have been spayed/neutered. You don't need a big house to have a rabbit, a studio apartment is plenty. And you don't necessarily have to have a cage for the rabbit, either. Rabbits should just never be left outside and should never be forced to live in the outdoor weather. They want to be inside with their famillies where its warm and safe. Rabbits are susceptible to heat stroke in the summer and have no means to keep warm in the winter. Working 9-5 is perfect for rabbits as rabbits are active in the morning and in the evening and they tend to sleep all day and sleep all night. Do consider a rabbit as a pet, but please keep them inside! And do read up on bunny care, as they can live around 10 years, so its a big committment. Try www.rabbitnetwork.org for great information!
