I want to add a computer to my home network; however it is at the bottom of the garden in a shed, about 50m from the house.
What are my options?
Can I use a network cable over that distance, or are the losses too large? Is a special type of network cable required?
Other options; e.g. wireless?
Thanks.
50m network cable?
you can run a network cable up to 92m without any loss so 50m would be no problem, i'm a data engineer by the way!!!
try using Cat5e or Cat6 cable, i think you can buy it from any good electrical retail and it will have an RJ45 plug on both ends.
Reply:50m is a distance for wireless - and outside it will be effected by weather and other signals and networks that could be in the area.
Like the majority say 50m of cable should be fine but if you ask me and you dont mind a bit of effort go underground not over - Buy a garden hose (50m) thread your cable through the middle and bury it about 6 - 12 inches. No one can cut it the weather wont snap it - it wont look unsightly.
Reply:Go wireless trust me the amount of messing around and then what happens something or someone cuts the long cable outside. Go wireless but a decent wireless card with a booster if your not sure it will reach.
Yes, a cable will work but why mess around trying to keep it hidden when you get the same performance through wireless.
David says this -
"Don't add to the electromagnetic spectrum pollution, and put your security at risk, by using a wireless connection unnecessarily."
Your not putting anything at risk. As long as you have it secured know one will get in.
Reply:Cat 5 cable can be used up 100 meters without a problem.
If you need to go further, you can install 100 m of cable, plug it into a switch and connect 100 meters of cable to the switch
Further than that, you should be using fiber
Reply:What you are best of doing is keep your router with your PC/Laptop and use an extended phone line cable.
The londer the WLAN cable is, the poorer the connection and speed, but with a telephone cable, it doesn't matter. That's because it's an RJ11 comms cable, designed for it.
Reply:yes you should be able to get 50meters of cat6e its the best kind at the moment and theres not much of a price difference from cat 5e. I wouldn't reccomemnd using a router because it's going to be a hassle at first and it doesn't always connect. But if your buying a good brand such as linksys then your set for life!!!
Reply:Cable will work just fine. Don't add to the electromagnetic spectrum pollution, and put your security at risk, by using a wireless connection unnecessarily.
Reply:Wireless should work with line of site access or you can do wired Ethernet up to 100 M without problem, make sure you use exterior rated cable though.
Reply:Get a wireless device and boost them and you can access internet from your garden. It will cost you at least £15 - £20.
Reply:you should be OK with a network cable
otherwise it's WiFi and maybe a WiFi Booster
Reply:according to the specs a cat5 network cable can be 105 meters in lenght
So when only 50 meters it should work
Reply:Wireless is the way forward..don't forget an encryption
Reply:I would not recomend network cable for this, I would buy a linksys wireless card and routor, And get a card that has range booster on it that will be better and faster.
